Hey Everyone!

Welcome back to school! We have some exciting things going on this year, and we already have some really good speakers lined up for our monthly meeting. We will be having some great companies like Lockheed coming to give us the inside scoop on how to get the advantage in the hiring process of a large corporation, and some great entrepreneurs coming to talk about what to do when you have that great idea and want to sell it. This year we will be having our meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 and food will be provided. Don’t forget about our Engineering Career Fair this year either, it will be held on October 16th and will be a great opportunity to line up a job or internship. Make sure to sign up to our email list to get the most current information on our events and see you at the meeting!

Thanks to everyone who helped out with or attended the Engineering Career Fair on Friday. We had a great turnout with almost 900 students and 39 companies. Hopefully both employers and attendees found the event helpful, and we will work to make next year’s fair even more successful.

The next ASME general meeting is coming up on Thursday, February 7 in GWC 487 at 5:30. The meeting will feature an engineering manager from Lockheed Martin in addition to the usual free food and ASME information. Be sure to RSVP to asme@asu.edu so we can make sure we have enough food, but show up even if you don’t RSVP for some reason.

ASME is also busy getting ready for the Engineering Career Fair coming up on February 22. If you haven’t heard already, this is a career fair with over 100 companies completely focused on recruiting engineering students for jobs and internships. We are still looking for more people to help out with planning and execution of the event, so if you want something to put on your resume or want a unique opportunity to interact with the companies, send us an email and we can talk about ways you can help. We are also starting to get ready for this year’s Student Professional Development Conference in Denver.  This is a conference with events such as design and presentation contests, job fairs, and recreational opportunities such as skiing. We are looking for students who would be interested in representing ASU by presenting their research or design projects in the poster, oral, or website design competitions. Entrants would receive free travel and registration fees to the conference and have a solid chance at cash prizes ranging from $50 to $500. If this interests you, send us an email or talk to an officer at the meeting on Thursday.

Take a break from your projects and come grab some free food. The main speaker will be ASU’s own Dr. Trimble who will talk about engineering careers, his own career path, and some of the most interesting projects he has worked on over the years. You can also find out about opportunities for various contests next semester and learn about the upcoming engineering book exchange. Be sure to RSVP so we can get enough food, but show up even if you don’t RSVP for some reason. See you there!

On another note, congratulations to Brian Rosner who represented ASU and his design team in taking 3rd place at the ASME International Student Design Competition. He single-handedly outpedaled teams of three and four people to distill 140 ml of water in an hour. Stop by the ME office to see the trophy he brought back.

ASU ASME will be joining the Central Arizona Senior Chapter on a tour of the local APS Solar Test and Research center (STAR) and the hydrogen plant in downtown Phoenix. We will be meeting at the STAR site at 9:00am, although you can come later if needed. A bus will leave STAR at 11:00 to take those interested to the hydrogen plant. You can hang out at STAR until 3:00pm, but leave whenever you want to.
The address is 1500 E. University Dr. (close to McClintock Dr. and right by campus). If you would like a ride, a car will be leaving ASU at 8:45am. Send an email if you need a ride. Wear closed toed comfortable walking shoes. Cameras are allowed on the STAR tour, but not the hydrogen tour. If you plan to come, please send an RSVP to asme@asu.edu so we can give APS an estimate.
